I’ve been reading Emma Thompson’s screenplay for Sense and Sensibility (which is a delight!), and one thing that caught my eye was the way she introduces the male love interests. In their first scenes, both Edward Ferrars and Colonel Brandon make a point to be kind to the youngest sister, Margaret.
In his first scene, Edward refuses to pile on when his sister starts making snide comments about the behavior of the youngest Dashwood daughter. In that same scene, we learn that Edward has learned of Fanny’s plan to give him Margaret’s room with the lovely view, and he has chosen instead to take one of the guest rooms, rather than displace a grieving girl. This action puts him in stark contrast with John and Fanny who are gleefully taking over the Dashwood women’s home.
In his first scene, Colonel Brandon immediately picks up on Margaret’s longing to travel and (rather than simply ignoring the strange child, as we might expect him to do) delivers a line about his own experiences abroad that may be a bit cringe to most of us today, but which she finds entrancing.
Willoughby, on the other hand, nearly runs her over with his horse.
Hey Snapedom, I don’t know how many of you are on instagram but just warning you the instagram user @just.alan.rickman is stealing and reposting people’s art. They’ve stolen from @madfantasy , @elenianz , and @the-mr-lolipop-things . When me and other snapedom members told them they were stealing and should take the posts down they were a total jackass to me and @corgi-nub and said that sai users should be GRATEFUL for the free advertising when they gave no credits or links. Please don’t follow them, and if you have it in you stop by and give them a report or something. I’m somebody who is very live and let live, but art theft is something I am not okay with at all.
